This first one I made today. The others I made yesterday. It was nice outside yesterday. I walked on the ice with my friend, Alb. We both slipped and fell on our asses on different but close moments. The sun was out and everything was beautiful!

I started using watercolor paper. Man, that stuff is good. I had some Arches 140# cold press that a friend up in Marquette gave me that I never used too much. It's so much better than Bristol board at taking watercolor but it's harder to draw on. Still, it's a joy to work on a nice surface instead of whatever you got.

If you get watercolor paper and you really like working watercolors then get Arches 140# or heavier cold press. You can draw with charcoal or pastel on that paper too. I bought a pad of Strathmore watercolor paper a long time ago. Twas shit. But maybe it was a lighter weight. I do remember there was sizing on it.

Anyway, I really like the free Arches I have! I like these non-objective drawings but I should get back into objective sometime. I should select a still-life soon.

I need a job too! (I guess)

Hang in there!
Hello,

The first two images are ones that I made today. I'm starting to spend all day on these.

The third one I made yesterday, I think.

I gotta scan in the rest of the old ones that I made since I've been back in Muskegon. Or I might do something else. Who knows really.
I've been making new paintings. I don't live in Marquette anymore. I live in Muskegon at my mom's house. I'm looking for work in the art world. I had to get out of the grocery business.

These images are non-objective therefore there are no mistakes. They are 9"x11". Ink pen and watercolor on smooth Bristol. Sometimes I use a pencil. I have more to scan and I make new ones often.

I really like my new pen. I got it at Hobby Lobby. It is called ZIG drawing pen and is made in Japan by Kuretake.
It's from the cover of Eddie Campbell's magazine, "Egomania" #2. The photo was taken by Jose Villarrubia in 2002.

I just thought it was a great photo and I love Alan Moore.

I like vellum bristal board and a 2B pencil the best. And I like to listen to records and draw pictures.

He even looks like Swamp Thing.

I don't know who took the original picture but I thought it was a good book and a nice picture so I drew it.

"A Happy Death" is Camus' first novel. Written in the thirties but not published until the seventies.

Read it.
Do you know whose images these are?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08547620341239304751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1543234380908783512.post-62813951941126534522013-08-11T00:48:00.003-04:002013-08-11T10:25:34.039-04:00Mike Waite posterI finished a poster for Mike Waite who has a regular gig up here at the Ramada. It's a tradition now on Tuesday nights to go to Harley's Lounge see Mike play and eat tacos.

He wanted a poster that might attract more people. This is what I came up with. I worked from a photo that I took of him, which is not my favorite method but it's a modern world. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08547620341239304751noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1543234380908783512.post-2538352654228576562013-08-11T00:43:00.000-04:002013-08-11T00:43:21.446-04:00The Atelier, Minneapolis MNOn July 14th I went to Minneapolis. My purpose was to attend a life drawing workshop at The Atelier. I made it, by the grace of God and Hal's Subaru, and spent a wonderful week staying with my friends Jeremy and Sam and their dog Chief. In the mornings I would go do some things: sketching and sunbathing at Lake Linden, visiting the Walker Museum, disc golfing at Kaposia park in St. Paul and then in the afternoons I would go downtown to The Atelier to draw. My favorite lunch place was the ChinDian Cafe on East Hennepin.

They don't mess around at The Atelier. I learned a lot about drawing, seeing and materials. It's a very traditional vibe there.

We spent all week on this one drawing.

I remember Dale Redpath saying that it was a game. She told me to
sharpen my pencil. She told me to make a decision and commit to a
brightness structure. She said sometimes it looks like I know what I'm
doing and sometimes not.

I actually felt like spending time on this drawing. I felt like it wasn't a big deal. I was having fun for the first time in a long time.

At night I would spend time with Jeremy and Sam. It was good to reconnect with them at their home and experience the city and the neighborhood with some locals.

The next week I went to Chicago to see my friends Todd and Thom. I had a nice good time with them, went to some record shops and waited by the car until it was legal to park where we were by the Contemporary Art Museum. They are closed on Mondays. But we did see the Daniel Clowes exhibit. It was good to see those big pages.

My visit with Todd was short but sweet.

Next then I went to Muskegon, my home town, to see my mother and family. I thank my mother for insisting that we go down to the beach at night for a fire. One night a lot of my family showed up: Aunt Tina, Aunt Maria with Alex, Kevin and Wyette, Grandma Mona, Uncle Frank and his wife Christie with their children Frankie and Giadda, who else ? Mom.

This is me at the beach at night. You cannot see the fire.

My Mom and I went to the Muskegon Art Museum and saw the Regional Show. Not much realistic painting but for Harry Ahn's For The Birds and others.

I was very impressed with the black and white room. Here's a photo my Mom took.

Later my Mom and I went for Mexican food at a place I can't remember in Roosevelt Park where I had my first Chimichanga.

Good vacation.

All in all I learned a lot. Nuff said. Back to work!
I didn't know what to do. I was going to make another collage and I was looking through my science book and I saw this image and I said, "I'll just draw that". A new month and a new poster. I went down to the beach and captured a seagull. His image, that is. They don't like it when you kneel down and point at them. To get a good shot I had to just act naturally and stay standing up otherwise they would fly away. This one stuck around long enough for me to get multiple images. I kept saying "thank you" to the bird. Thank you, bird.

I use Crayola colored pencils.

Until next time,
Well, drink plenty of water. Recommended dosage is 1/2 your body weight in ounces. For example, a 200 lb. person should consume 100 oz. throughout the day. Remember the best way to drink water is to sip it. Don't chug it like a beer. Drink water 30 minutes before eating and 2 hours after eating. No coffee, tea, alcohol or soda. All fluids are not water. Milk is food. Coffee is not water because the caffeine is a diuretic and a drug. Water is a nutrient.

For more info see the research of Dr. Batmanghelidj on water.
And here's a new poster.

Here's another Sparrow Tree poster. For their show in May.

It looks like a high school senior picture for the lion. Or maybe it was junior high.

It's another collage deal. The posters go more quickly when I don't draw the images. Hmm.
I went to Vinnie's today to get some images for making posters. This is what I came up with today. It's a combo of collage and painting. No computer work here. Just scissors, gluestick and black ink.

This stuff makes me laugh.
Lately, I've been working on still life. I'm getting ready for the spring when I can go outside and draw. I've got a plan this time.
Greetings!

More recent work. January and February went by pretty quickly without much poster work to show for it. We got a lot of snow though.

February did have two MOMB shows! That was fun!

I'm looking forward to Springtime!

Artists featured on these posters: Sparrow Tree, Gretchen McKenzie, Sycamore Smith, Rachel Brooke, Wett Nurse, MOMB, Shadow Arcade, James Lee Jones, Petty Tyrants, Seaside Lucha! and Kiddywompus.

That's a lot of people!

I want to have a show of my posters somewhere sometime somehow.

All Good Things,
My friend, Jeremy, had me make this image which he then gave to his lady friend as a gift.

I used a variety of sources: an image from a book, my sketches of water, some rocks I found on my porch and yesterday's clouds.

I used a Derwent 2B pencil. The paper is vellum Bristol board.

I learned a lot from this project and I feel fortunate to be doing this work.

See you!

P.S. The show at the Wild Rover was great and our band has a new name: Peace In The Village.
